Ayeesha is a proud Māori (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Koura) Grenadian woman, born in St. George’s, Grenada and raised in Meanjin. Ayeesha is a writer, producer, podcast host, director, content creator, storyteller and the Artistic Director of critically acclaimed creative arts company, Black Birds. As an interdisciplinary artist she seeks to spark social consciousness through her work, championing nuanced representation of visual, vocal and cultural identities of People of Colour in the Australian arts industries. Ayeesha is graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (Acting) and the University of Technology Sydney (BA Communications; Social & Political Studies).
She has created work with & for BuzzFeed Oz, Pedestrian, Sydney Morning Herald, FBi Radio, Cement Fondu, Arts House, Audrey Journal, Sydney Fringe Festival, Next Wave Festival, Museum of Contemporary Art, Festival Fatale, Art Gallery of New South Wales, La Boite, Roadshow Rough Diamond + more. She was the recipient of the 2022 All About Women of Colour Mentorship and her Black Birds show ‘Reclaim’ (co-produced with Sela Vai) won the 2020 FBi Radio SMAC Award for ‘Best On Stage’.
As an actor she has performed in works for Belvoir Street Theatre, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Arts House, Ensemble Theatre, Bondi Feast, Griffin Theatre Company, The Old Fitz, Bell Shakespeare, Metro Arts, ATYP.
Her latest project with Black Birds is the development of Seen: a television series produced by Roadshow Rough Diamond based on Black Birds’ sold out stage show, Brown Skin Girl.
